Law enforcement agencies received 47 phishing scams in the past week, involving a total of more than HK$2.5 million. One of the victims received a phishing scam text message from a scammer pretending to be Binance, saying that someone was trying to log into his account. The victim did not suspect it and called the phone number in the text message. The fraudster falsely claimed during the call that hackers were attempting to withdraw US dollars from his account and that he urgently needed to transfer his assets.
The victim transferred virtual currency to the designated wallet address multiple times according to the scammers’ instructions. However, when the victim called the scammer again to find out more, the scammer replied “This is a scam” and the victim realized that he had been cheated.
